Little, George

George Little, soldier, county official, and planter, was born in Chowan County, the son of Chief Justice William and Penelope Gale Little, daughter of Chief Justice Christopher and Sarah Laker Harvey Gale (the widow of Governor John Harvey). When Hertford County was formed in 1759, Little's home was in that part of Chowan that became a part of the new county. On 19 Apr. 1776 he was appointed to receive, procure, and purchase firearms for the use of troops, and on 2 Sept. 1777 he was appointed by the Council of State at New Bern to recruit men to fill up the regiments from the District of Hertford. He was a major of the Hertford County militia. On 3 Feb. 1781 he resigned his commission as colonel, the rank he apparently attained at some unknown date, and in 1782 he was a member of the Council of Safety. He also served for many years as a justice of the peace for Hertford County. In 1760 Little married Mary Ann Person, of Surry County, Va., the sister of General Thomas Person. They became the parents of William Person and Penelope, who married Sharp Blount.
