a coarse-grained igneous rock that has an even texture, is usually light in color, and is composed chiefly of quartz and feldspars but can contain small quantities of mica or hornblende and other minor minerals. Depending on the feldspar present, granite may be pink, dark gray, or light gray. Granite is commonly believed to have solidified from molten rock (magma) under pressure, but can also be formed through metamorphism.
